What is SPAM used for?

The most basic spam is used to sell a product or service. An example is when the sender has bought a database or collected email addresses without consent and uses them to send a commercial message with the aim of getting customers due to the large volume of contacts made.

Every time is more and more difficult to get these types of communications through the spam filter, just as those aimed at stealing personal information or bank details, because the recipients easily detect that it is unwanted and mark it as such. A case that is not so clear to recognise is when it is a known sender but misuses the consent that was given.

The worst cases of spam have to do not only with the frequency of the attack, but also with its purpose of fraud or phishing.

How to prevent an email from being considered spam

There are several ways for a message to end up in the spam folder, either automatically -according to the configuration of the anti-spam filters of the servers and mail managers-, or manually -when it is the user himself who decides that it is spam and complains about it-.

Starting with the choice of recipients, as we have already mentioned, it is important to avoid using addresses for which you do not have consent. In this way, you do not fall into the traps of the providers and the sender's reputation is not devalued. To decide whether it is potentially sent by a spammer, filters also look at attachments (using a mass mailing platform this is not possible), type of links (they should not be shortened) and number of images (do not dedicate the whole email to just one).

The subject line and content should be written without using words that are common among those seeking fraudulent clicks or sales of dubious products, for example using too much exclamations, repeating "free" several times or using a translation with too many errors due to being automatic.

Good segmentation is also important because it allows you to better tailor your content to the interests of each type of recipient. In addition, it is advisable to maintain a good frequency of campaigns so that they do not forget that they signed up and consider it spam because they lost confidence in the sender.
